Save Gmail attachments to Drive, automatically

Every attachment that lands in your Gmail is saved to a Google Drive folder for you. Three steps, about five minutes.

Before you start

FREE WHILE IN EARLY ACCESS

It is free right now. If you try it, a one-line note through "Feedback" (top right) would help a lot.

Copy the tool to my Drive

Click while signed in to Google and a copy prompt opens.

Saves automatically
Every 15 minutes, attachments from your Gmail are saved to the Drive folder you choose. Leave it alone and they pile up.
Renames files
The date goes in front, like "2026-09-11_invoice.pdf". You can also add the sender or the subject. Scans and faxes named "001.pdf" become easy to tell apart.
Files things away by month
After the number of days you choose, a file moves into a month folder like "2026.09". Only recent files stay at the top, so the folder stays easy to browse. When the year changes, last year's months are grouped into a year folder.
Keeps a log
When, from whom, from which email, and what was saved: one row each in a spreadsheet. Click the subject to open the email, click the file name to open the file.
Never saves twice
The same email is never saved again. Files with the same name are numbered instead of overwritten. Emails you sent yourself and signature logos are skipped.
Lets you narrow it down
"Only from this sender", "only with this label": anything you can type into the Gmail search box works.
Stays inside your account
It runs entirely inside your own Google account. No email or file is ever sent to an outside server.

Watch the setup (2 min, no audio)

  1. 1

    Make your copy

Click the button above → click Make a copy on the screen that appears

The spreadsheet that opens is your own. From here on, work in that spreadsheet.

If you see "Share it with the same people", leave it unchecked.

  2. 2

    Set it up

Click 📬 Attachment Saver → Set up

Then just answer the questions. Leaving every box empty and clicking OK is fine.

If the menu is not there yet, the copy is still getting ready. Wait about 30 seconds and reload the page.

  3. 3

    Try it

Click 📬 Attachment Saver → Save now

If attachments show up in the folder, it works.

That's it. From now on it saves automatically every 15 minutes.

You can stop reading here

The rest is only for when something gets in the way.

What you need

  • A Google account that uses Gmail
  • A computer for the setup (phones don't work for setup; once it's running you can forget about it)
  • If it's a company Google account, your admin must allow Apps Script (if it's blocked, step 2 will not go through)

Gmail only. Outlook and other mail services are not supported. Attachments must be attached to the email itself; Drive share links are not saved.

If you see "Google hasn't verified this app"

It appears during step 2. Nothing is broken. Every tool made by an individual shows this warning.

Click Advanced → Go to ... (unsafe) → Allow.

① When this appears, click "Advanced" at the bottom left
② More text appears below. Click "Go to ... (unsafe)" at the very bottom

Then click "Allow" and you're done. The "developer" address shown is your own: once you made the copy, you became its owner. You are not handing access to anyone else.

The permission covers only your own Gmail and Drive. Nobody else can see your data.

What the questions mean

1

Where to save

Open the folder in Drive and paste its URL. Leave it empty and a new folder is created.

2

Which emails

Leave it empty for every email with an attachment.

3

How many days back

Empty means 30 days, and the first run saves all of them at once. To try with just a little, enter "1".

4

Days before filing away

After the number of days you enter, a file moves into a month folder like "2026.09". You can choose any number of days. When the year changes, last year's months go into a "2026" folder. Empty means 10.

5

How to name files

Empty means "date + original name".

The "📬 Attachment Saver" menu doesn't appear

You may have the original open instead of your copy. Go back to step 1.

If it still doesn't appear, the copy is still getting ready. Wait about 30 seconds and reload.

Nothing gets saved

There may be no email with an attachment in the period. Run "Set up" again and enter "30" for question 3.

Two files with the same name

Not a fault. When two emails carry attachments with the same name, a number is added so neither one is overwritten.

Other notes

Please don't sort the Log sheet. The month divider rows would end up in the wrong places. Filtering is fine.

Attachments in emails you sent yourself are skipped on purpose, so that forwarding an email does not save the same file twice.

🤖 Let your AI assistant walk you through it

Paste the text below into ChatGPT or any AI assistant. It will guide you one step at a time. Reply "done" to move on.

You are a guide helping me set up a tool that saves Gmail attachments to Google Drive automatically. I am not confident with computers. Give me one action per reply, in plain words. When I say "done", move to the next step. If I say I don't understand, explain it a different way.

[About the tool]
- It is a program (Apps Script) built into a Google Sheet. I copy the sheet to my own Drive and run the setup from its menu. That is all.
- Every 15 minutes it saves attachments from my Gmail into a Drive folder I choose, with the date added to the front of each file name. After the number of days I choose, files move into a month folder like "2026.09". A record of every save is kept in the sheet's "Log" tab.
- Everything runs inside my own Google account. Nothing is sent to an outside server.

[Steps]
1. On the tool's page, click "Copy the tool to my Drive", then click "Make a copy" on the screen that appears. A copy opens in a new tab; from now on I work in that copy. I leave "Share it with the same people" unchecked.
2. In the copy, click the menu "📬 Attachment Saver" → "Set up". If the menu is not there yet, the copy is still getting ready: wait about 30 seconds and reload.
3. The first time, Google asks for permission: "Authorization required" → "Continue" → choose my account → a screen with a red triangle says "Google hasn't verified this app". This warning appears for every tool made by an individual; nothing is broken. Click "Advanced" at the bottom left, then the last link "Go to Gmail Attachment Auto-Save (unsafe)", then "Allow" on the next screen. The "developer" address shown is my own, because I became the owner when I made the copy.
4. Five questions appear in turn. Leaving all of them empty and clicking OK works.
   1) Where to save: open the folder in Drive and paste its URL. Empty creates a folder called "Gmail Attachments".
   2) Which emails: empty means every email with an attachment. Gmail search wording (from:someone@example.com, label:name) narrows it down.
   3) How many days back: empty means 30. The first run saves all of them, so to try with just a little, enter "1".
   4) Days before filing into month folders: enter the number of days to choose when files move. Empty means 10. "0" means move when the month changes.
   5) File naming: 1 = date + original name, 2 = date + sender + original name, 3 = original name only, 4 = date + subject + original name. 4 is handy for scans and faxes named "001.pdf".
5. When "Setup complete" appears, click "📬 Attachment Saver" → "Save now". If attachments appear in the folder, it works. From then on it saves automatically every 15 minutes.

[Common problems]
- The "📬 Attachment Saver" menu is missing: I may have the original open instead of my copy. Open the copy. If it is still missing, wait about 30 seconds and reload.
- "Please run Set up again" appears: run "Set up" again.
- Nothing is saved: there may be no email with an attachment in the period. Run "Set up" again and enter "30" for question 3.
- A company Google account cannot get past step 3: the admin may have blocked Apps Script. Try a personal Gmail account.
- Two files with the same name: when two emails carry attachments with the same name, a number is added so neither is overwritten. This is by design.
- Attachments in emails I sent myself are not saved: this is on purpose, to avoid saving the same file twice when forwarding.

[Limits]
- Gmail only. Outlook and other services are not supported.
- Setup must be done on a computer, not a phone. Once running, it can be left alone.
- Do not sort the Log sheet; the month divider rows would end up in the wrong places.

Please start with the first action.
